Foster Grandparents

The Foster Grandparent Program began in 1965 as a national demonstration effort. It showed how low-income persons aged 60 and over have the wisdom and experience to foster with children who have exceptional and special needs. Crossing the divide of generations has made a tremendous difference in the lives of thousands of children by providing nurturing support from one of our countries most valuable assets and resources.

The Foster Grandparent program is a win-win situation by providing the opportunity for active seniors to share their wealth of knowledge, provide a valuable resource to the community and at the same time maintain a sense of purpose and high self esteem For the children who are fortunate to have a Foster Grandparent, the nurturing, special tutoring, guidance and individual attention can make all the difference in positive growth and social development. This in turn impacts the child's family in a beneficial way.

Each Foster Grandparent provides 20 hours of service per week and receives a modest stipend of $2.65 per hour, vacation and sick leave, transportation reimbursement, a daily meal, and four hours of inservice each month. The Foster Grandparent Program is federally funded through the Corporation for National and Community Service, National Senior Service Corps.
