Parents as Teachers is a nation-wide, evidence-based curriculum which operates under the philosophy that parents are the first and best teachers for their children. Under a grant through the First 5 Commission of San Diego, the Catholic Charities (CCDSD) PAT Program offers services to families with children ages 0-5, with a special interest in refugee and immigrant families, participants of CalWORKS, and low-income families.
- The program is rooted in the theory that increased knowledge leads to increased confidence which influences change in behaviors.
- Our staff includes bilingual and bicultural trained parent educators. They provide monthly home visits, offering services to help our clients develop effective parenting skills, as well as to promote early learning and pre-Iiteracy in their children. The visits include active participation by the parent and child, and are specifically tailored to meet each client's needs and goals.
- Other components of the program include: developmental screenings for each child, monthly group meetings of the participants, referrals to other resources if needed, and the i involvement of senior volunteers to act as mentors/tutors.
